The 1950s...

The boom years of cycling had arrived, lots of cafes, cycle shops, manufacturers, and record attendances on the rides. The Queen`s coronation in 1953 was marked with many special events, all were a great success including a Miss Cycling competition.

Our D.A. held photographic shows, film shows, tourist trials, cycle shows and sports days at Hatchmere. An annual reunion took place at West Derby Village Hall with 300 people attending.

However, by the late 1950s things began to change. Cycle shops reported decreased trade and cafes, particularly those in private houses, disappeared one by one. What the car had done to the railways was repeated in cycling and the Government were half around the bend over road casulaties.
